Message from District Governor Jeff Yong for The Month of December 2019

Wednesday, 4 December 2019

The month of December in Rotary is Disease Prevention and Treatment. This is one of the Foundations Area of Focus. Disease prevention and treatment takes on many forms, from supporting studies to helping immunize people to improving drinking water and the sanitation infrastructure. I urge you to support health education programs to promote ways to reduce the risk of transmission against infectious diseases.

November came and went and I attended a club installation and visited eight (8) clubs in our District.

It was yet another adventurous trip for me to participate in the Clean Water Project at Kampong Kawa in the interior of Sarawak on November 14-16, 2019 organised by the RC Bandar Seri Begawan and jointly participated by members of three (3) others clubs, RC Singpore, RC Singapore West and RC Taichung Huangzhong. This project serves to provide access to clean and reliable water for over 200 indigenous Penans.

December is the season for celebrations and it is also the month of family travels and bonding. Let us reflect on the good things in our life. It is also the time of the year when most charitable giving happens. Let us continue to make our lasting commitment so that the important work of our Foundation will continue in perpetuity.

It has been an inspiration for me to witness the last leg of the Trans Asia Cycling by two cyclists from Rotary club of Calicut Uptown, RID3201 India. In pursuing their vision of “Rotary Connects the World” and with their courage and determination, they had cycled from Kerala to Singapore with a total estimated distance of 8,000km. They were joined by other rotarians from Malaysia and Singapore who escorted the two cyclists from Batu Pahat to Singapore. Rotary Connects The World.

The Membership & Public Image Seminar for Johor/Melaka and Singapore were held in Batu Pahat and Singapore respectively last month.

It was indeed a privilege for me to be invited by RC Singapore to attend their vocational project, Entrepreneur of the year award (EYA). All the awardees of this prestigious award must be a community minded person in order to meet the main qualifying criteria.

Under the stewardship of Project Chair, Past President Siraj bin Mullah Taheral of RC of Muar, the “Back to School” project were launched in Malaysia in collaboration with Yayasan Kelab Kelab Rotary Malaysia with over 20,000 school bags being distributed by the various rotary clubs in Malaysia in both D3310 and D3300. RC Bandar Seri Begawan also participated in the project.

The highlight of this month’s event is the Manila Rotary Institute held on November 28-December 1, 2019. During the event, the 2020 Singapore Rotary Institute was launched by the Organising Chair, PDG Chew Ghim Bok. I urge you to grab the opportunity to register as early as possible to take advantage of the early bird rates before it ends on February 29, 2020.

My family and I wish you all the peace and joy of the season. Here’s to wishing you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas to those celebrating. And as we bid adieu to 2019 and ring in the new year 2020, may the New Year bring you and your family joy, peace and happiness.

Jeff Yong
D3310 District Governor 2019-20
