On 27 January 2018, Rotary Club of Muar cooperated with Rotary E Club of 3310 from Singapore to conduct a full day Communication and Public Speaking workshop held at the Dewan Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah, Muar.
More than 150 students participated in the workshop. The students came from 15 secondary schools in Muar, Tangkak, Bukit Pasir, Pagoh, Parit Jawa and other areas around Muar. Also present were PPD officers and more than 12 teachers from several schools. About 20 Rotary Club members took part in the workshop session too and they are specifically from Rotary Club of Muar and Rotary E Club of 3310, Singapore.
The cost of attending workshop was priced at only RM10 per student. This was done to make the workshop affordable for everyone. Three meals were provided during the event and these include breakfast, lunch and teatime.
A briefing and training was conducted for 28 student and Rotary facilitators one day earlier, on 26 January at Rotary Muar clubhouse. This was to ensure that everyone know their roles and this helped to make the workshop session smooth, efficient and effective.
The workshop commenced at 8.30 am and ended at 5.30 pm. Various forms of communication were explained to the students. Students were given lots of opportunities to conduct presentations, public speaking, impromptu speeches, etc. The session was designed to be as interactive and participative as possible. Improvement in the students was noticeable when you compare them in the morning when they were less confident and hesitant to the evening when many of them were eager to showcase their speaking and communication abilities. A friendly competition was also conducted between the teams. Top prizes and consolation prizes were presented to the winners.
Overall, it was a successful Communication and Public Speaking workshop with great participation from more than 150 students, teachers, Rotary members and the PPD.
The project has benefitted the students and we hope to be able to conduct more of such workshops in partnership with Rotary clubs and Interact Clubs in the future.
This event goes to show that with strong collaboration and support between Rotary Club of Muar , Rotary E Club of 3310 Singapore, the PPD of Muar, the Interact Clubs of Muar and participating schools and teachers, the results of a workshop session can be awesome.
