Overview:

On 27 January 2018, Rotary Club of Muar cooperated with the Rotary E Club of 3310 from Singapore to conduct a full day Communication and Public Speaking workshop at Dewan Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah, Muar.

More than 150 students participated in the workshop. The students were from 15 secondary schools in Muar, Tangkak, Bukit Pasir, Pagoh, Parit Jawa and other areas around Muar. Also present were PPD officers and more than 12 teachers from many schools. About 20 Rotary Club members participated in the workshop too, especially those from Rotary Club of Muar and Rotary E Club of 3310, Singapore.

The cost of the workshop was only MYR10 per student. It was planned to be most affordable for everyone. Three meals were provided including breakfast, lunch and teatime.

A briefing and training was conducted for 28 student and Rotary facilitators one day earlier, on 26 January, at Rotary Club of Muar clubhouse. It was to ensure everyone know their respective roles and this resulted in a smooth, efficient and effective workshop.

The workshop on 27 January was from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Various forms of communication were explained to the students. Different communication and personality styles were covered and self-assessments were done. There was plenty of participation from the students in handling presentations and in doing public speaking from prepared speeches, to impromptu speeches and many others. It was designed to be as interactive and participative as possible from the student participants. After attending the workshop we could see improvement in the students by comparing them in the morning when they were still less confident and hesitant to the evening when a number of them were most eager to showcase their public speaking and communication abilities. A friendly competition was also conducted between the teams with prizes presented to the winners. Consolation prizes were also given.

Overall, it was a successful Communication and Public Speaking workshop with great participation from more than 150 students, teachers, Rotary members and the PPD.

It is a project that is beneficial to the students and we hope to be able to conduct more of such workshops in partnership with Rotary clubs and Interact Clubs in the future.

Rotary Club of Muar records its thanks and appreciation to Rotary E Club of 3310 Singapore, the PPD of Muar, the Interact Clubs of Muar, all schools involved, all teachers supporting and everyone who was a part of this successful, memorable workshop.
