My Dear Fellow Rotarians,

As you read this email, be it on your desktop, laptop, tablet or smart phone, you will tend to take for granted the ease of which you are scanning through the words that are written here. This is mainly because you are blessed with good eye sight and of course the learned ability to make sense of this gibberish which I am writing!

The Sense of Sight is arguably the most important of all our senses and if we were to stop for a moment to imagine what our world would be like if we were to live in darkness (if we were blind), I am sure you will agree with me that life may not be worth living. Not only will visual impairment be a personal burden, it becomes a burden to our loved ones as well as the society as a whole! There are hundreds of millions of people in the world who are visually impaired and of these, tens of millions who are blind! In Malaysia itself, the numbers do not make good reading either and knowledge about preventable blindness conditions are poor and there are still many areas which can be improved when it comes to preventing Blindness!

District 3300 together with our neighbours District 3310 have established taskforces to address the significant issue of Blinding diseases in our districts. The District Committees for Prevention of Blindness chaired by Dato S Kulasegaran (D3300) and PP James Gomez(D3310), have spear-headed numerous activities over the past few years targeted at raising awareness towards this common goal. The “Seeing Eye to Eye” Joint District Seminar has been a regular feature in our Rotary Calendars over the past few years and this year it will be hosted and organised by D3300 in Ipoh!

Many eminent ophthalmologists will be present at the Seminar on the 18th of October to enlighten us with regards to our eye health and there will also be Free Eye Screening as well as a “Seeing in the Dark” experience for those who want to know what it would be like to be visually impaired or blind! There will also be an opportunity to find out about the numerous projects which the Rotary Clubs in our districts have been conducting in the efforts to Fight Blindness.

In the spirit of any Rotary event, Fellowship will not be forgotten. A Welcome Reception/Dinner/Darts Competition will be held on 17th October and this will be an opportunity for us to let our hair down and relax! The 19th of October has no formal programme but is left for the foodies amongst us to sample the culinary delights Ipoh has to offer or perhaps to see some of the sights in Ipoh or Perak.

All in all, I would urge all Rotarians to attend this informative and fellowship-filled Rotary event! Attached is more information about the event, a registration form as well as an initial program for the seminar. Please feel free to print out the necessary documents and spread the word to those who may not be subscribed to this email group. I look forward to receiving your registration forms very soon!

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to write me at the above email or call me on 017-9210683.

Yours in Rotary,
