Bishan Home Van Project 2015-16

Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled, situated at 6, Bishan Street 13, Singapore 579798, operates two programs for the intellectually disabled; a residential program currently operating at almost full capacity with 128 residents and a recently renovated Day Activity Centre with 25 clients. Many of the residents have been with the Home since it first started in 1998. Over the years these residents have become older and are beginning to have difficulties

in walking. As more and more are wheelchair bound and the risks of fall increasing, there arise the need to upgrade their existing ambulance to a wheelchair lifter van.

Rotary Club of Garden City accepted the proposal by PP Anthony Twohill to undertake the project to fund the purchase of the new lifter van.

Led by the Service Project Chair, IPP Florence Lim, together with five (5) clubs, and a matching grant from Foundation of Rotary Clubs Singapore, we raised a total of S$79,500.— towards this joint community service project.

Breakdown of commitments:

Rotary Club of Garden City $39,800.-

Rotary Club of Singapore East $10,200.-

Rotary Club of Serangoon Garden Orchard $10,500.-

Rotary Club of Marina City $ 7,000.-

AG Roger – RC of Bugis Junction $ 1,000.-

E-Club of Singapore $ 1,000.-

Foundation of Rotary Clubs (Singapore) Ltd $10,000.-

The cost of the Toyota Hiace High Roof Van is $51,418.—and that of the wheelchair lifter for two wheelchairs is $18,190.—

After deducting expenses for putting up van signages and other costs, the balance is utilised for the Handover Van Ceremony and a buffet party for all participating club members to celebrate Christmas with the Home residences and staff.

This event scheduled to be on 12th December 2015 was a success. Everyone present enjoyed the performance of dances and songs by the residences and staff.

Being the lead club for this meaningful joint-club activity, RCGC thank all participating clubs for their generous contributions and efforts for making a difference in the lives of the intellectually disabled residences in Bishan Home and creating an impact on the Home’s services rendered to the Day Activity Centre.
