The 103rd Rotary International Convention

Dear Rotarians:

The 103rd Convention of Rotary Internation is just round the corner, the event of grandeur will be jointly hosted by the four Rotary districts (3330, 3340, 3350, 3360) in the Kingdom of Thailand from 6-9 May 2012.

The primary purpose of the Rotary International Convention is to stimulate, inspire, and inform Rotarians at an international level while advancing the strategic goals of the association.  It is also the annual business meeting of RI. The Convention program includes preconvention meetings, plenary sessions, workshops, forums, entertainment, and other meetings.

The venue in Bangkok: IMPACT Challenger Hall, located in the north suburban city of Pakkret about 40 Kilometers from Bangkok’s central business district, is one of Asia’s largest and most modern exhibition and convention centre. It comprises three 20,000 square meters interconnected halls (Hall 1, 2, and 3) with a combined column free space of 60,000 sq meters (the total dimensions of eight soccer fields) – currently the world’s largest column-free hall.

About 40,000 Rotarians and the Family of Rotary are expected to attend this convention in the Land of a Thousand Smiles!  Two opening plenary sessions (first seating at 1000 hours and second seating at 1530 hours on Sun 6 May) are needed to accommodate all attendees.

Let’s take a sneak preview of the preliminary Bangkok Convention programs:

  • Five plenary sessions highlight inspirational speeches and share success stories from Rotary President and other leaders.  Simultaneous interpretation will be available in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai.
  • Breakout sessions offer an ample opportunity for Rotarians to share best practices and service project ideas, ranging from literacy projects around the world to public relations grant information. They will be held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons.
  • House of Friendship is the most frequented rendezvous of the entire event. Meet and greet fellow Rotarians.  Visit service project booths, rekindle old friendships, foster fellowships with newfound friends, sample delectable Thai cuisines, buy Rotary souvenirs, check e-mail at a free Internet café, and register for 2013 Convention in Lisbon, Portugal.
  • Host-ticketed events feature daily cultural entertainment programs by performing Rotarians from RID3330, 3340, 3350, 3360.  Matchless beauty of cultural heritage sites makes the Chaopraya River perfect for signature dinner cruising. Witness the demonstration of “Kitchen of the World” and experience Thai ethnic food tastings at specialty food stalls (only 300 baht each), dine and dance till you drop on Tue 8 May night to the tune of fever dance at the Naval Auditorium, or be simply mesmerized by the spectacular Siam Niramit Show.
  • The 3rd Rotary Peace Symposium will be an ideal forum for current and former Peace Fellows, Rotarians, and friends to discuss ways in which RI and The Rotary Foundation work to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through diverse initiatives. It will spotlight the work of the six Rotary Peace Centres, including Rotary Peace Centre @ Chulalongkorn University.
  • International Institute and Preconvention Meetings for Youth Exchange and Rotaract Officers, plus a special orientation for first-time convention attendees.
  • New electronic badges will provide attendees easy access to all RI events for which they have registered.
