Dear fellow Rotarians
New Generations Service encompassing Interact, Rotaract, RYLA and Youth Exchange officially became Rotary’s 5th Avenue of Service in 2010. RI encourages Rotary clubs to actively support youths as – “yesterday’s Interactors are today’s Rotaractors and tomorrow’s Rotarians…”. RYLA and Youth Exchange Alumni also good potential Rotarians.
Past RI President Luis Vicente Giay coined the term New Generations when he shared his belief that the future of Rotary lies in Rotary clubs involving young people in the organization’s programs and activities. He said “The New Generations are our investment in the future. Let us begin to build that future today. Rotary clubs should be committed to involving youth and young adults in their vocational, community, and international service projects, and to providing programs and resources to support them.”
Some of the things that Rotary clubs can do during this New Generations Service Month include:
- Sponsor an Interact Club
- Sponsor a Rotaract Club
- Sponsor a youth for RYLA / Advanced RYLA / International RYLA of District 3310
- Sponsor an inbound or outbound Youth Exchange
- Invite Interactors, Rotaractors and RYLA/Youth Exchange participants to share their experience at your club meeting
- Invite the principal and/or Teacher Advisor of your Interact/Rotaract club’s school to speak at your club meeting
- Invite your District Interact Chair or someone from the Dist Interact Committee to speak at your club meeting
- Invite your District Rotaract Chair or someone from the Dist Rotaract
- Committee to speak at your club meeting
- Invite your District RYLA Chair or someone from the Dist RYLA Committee to speak at your club meeting
- Invite your District Youth Exchange Chair or someone from the Dist Youth Exchange Committee to speak at your club meeting
- Invite your District New Generations Service Chair or someone from the Dist New Generations Service Committee to speak at your club meeting
- Include Interactors and Rotaractors in a club’s project/s and events
- Holding a “Career Day for your Interactors and/or Rotaractors
- Attending Interact club meeting
- Attending a Rotaract club meeting
- Posting information about Interact/Rotaract at local schools, colleges, universities, or community centers
- Organise lifeskills training for your Interactors/Rotaractors
- Start a Mentoring Program for Interactors/Rotaractors
- Invite former Rotaractors and RYLA/Youth Exchange Alumni to join your Rotary club
- Include articles about New Generations in your club newsletter
- Sharing details about New Generations projects on your club website and through social networks
- Contacting the local media to cover Interact and Rotaract club service projects and sharing the stories with fellow Rotarians
- Recognizing Rotarians who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to New Generations
- Recognizing students who exemplify Rotary’s ideals of service by offering awards and scholarships
- Involving local youths in fundraising efforts that support projects for young people locally and internationally
- Etc…
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity remind all New Generations Service Directors, Interact Rotarian Advisors & Rotaract Rotarian Advisors to ensure that their Interactors and/or Rotaractors log on to the RI website to update their respective club information.
