Dear Rotarians,
Today, I have learned that the Government of Pakistan has announced that the emergency phase is until 30 September 2010. That will also be the date, the district disaster relief effort will phase out this fund raising drive and work, since we will not be involved in any rehabilitation endeavour.
In the meantime, we have decided to donate S$30,000, from our collection, to the Singapore Red Cross Society to help them out to purchase some of the food packages locally, for distribution in Pakistan.
I understand that each food package is made up of: rice 30 kg, wheat 50 kg, lentils 10 kg, cooking oil, sugar, salt, and a gunny sack to hold the supplies. Each package can sustain family units of approximately 7 persons for a month.
PP Dr Yap Lip Kee has left for Islamabad to witness (on behalf of the Disaster Relief Committee and all of Singapore’s Rotary Clubs) the hand-over of goods to the Pakistan Red Crescent in Islamabad. He is traveling with two Singapore Red Cross officials, the Secretary General Colonel Chua and Mr. Lim. He is also taking the opportunity to see some of the work going on in the affected areas. Hopefully he will have something to present to our Clubs and district on return on Tuesday 21st. September. Will keep you posted. We wish him a safe journey.
We wish to thank all the Rotary clubs and Rotarians for the fantastic response and generous donations to make this meaningful humanitarian project possible.
With best wishes,
PP Dr Ho
